Well known for his Hong Kong Film Award-winning performances in the movies Infernal Affairs, Chungking Express, Happy Together, In the Mood for Love, 2046, and My Heart Is That Eternal Rose, he is also notable for his Asian Film Award-winning portrayal of Mr. Yee in the 2007 Ang Lee film Lust, Caution.
He rose to fame for his work on television -- specifically, for his role in the 1980s series Police Cadet -- and went on to make his cinematic debut in the 1989 movie A City of Sadness.
A Cantopop singer as well as an actor, he was featured on recordings titled Raining Night, Trapped by Love, and Love Day by Day.
In 2008, he and his girlfriend of two decades -- actress Carina Lau -- were married in a lavish ceremony in Bhutan.
He co-starred with Jet Li in the Academy Award-nominated film Hero.
