A trumpet player often compared to Louis Armstrong due to his exceptional talent.
He started playing in a local Independence band when he was fourteen years old.
He joined the Noble Sissle Dance Band in the 1930s and toured with them for a couple of years.
In 1920, he was married to Hazel B "Daisy" Mathews.
He performed trumpet on many recordings for singers, including work by Ma Rainey.
