He played piano and drums in his youth, but by age thirteen, he had committed himself to the guitar.
He was expelled from school for refusing to cut his long hair, and he took the opportunity to move to Colorado and join a band.
His wife Candy Givens was the vocalist for Zephyr, one of his earliest bands.
He replaced Ritchie Blackmore in Deep Purple.
