British cyclist who was the 1965 Road Race World Champion before collapsing during the Tour de France two years later.
He worked as a grocery delivery boy to earn money for a better bike as a teen.
He won a Team pursuit bronze medal at the 1956 Olympic Games.
He married Helen Sherburn on January 1, 1961; the couple had two daughters, Jane and Joanne.
He, like Tony McCoy, was a recipient of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year honor.
