Director of the comedy features Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994), The Nutty Professor (1996), Liar Liar (1997) and Bruce Almighty (2003). He also directed the 1998 drama/comedy Patch Adams and the 2011 documentary I Am.
He became the youngest-ever joke writer for comedian Bob Hope when he was hired at age 24.
His life changed after suffering from post-concussion syndrome following a bicycle accident, which prompted him to give away much of his personal fortune.
He married actress Jennifer Barker in June 1997, but they later divorced.
Jim Carrey starred in Shadyac's films Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Liar Liar and Bruce Almighty.
