He was a camper and counselor at Camp Androscoggin. He studied mathematics at Harvard College. He worked at the National Security Agency from 1955 to 1957.
His primary musical influence was musical theatre, especially Let's Face It by Cole Porter and Sylvia Fine.
His father was a necktie manufacturer. His family raised him Jewish, but he declared himself to be an agnostic atheist later on.
His 1954 performance at a Boston nightclub garnered early acclaim from author Isaac Asimov.
