Vaudevillian and Broadway comedian who made it a point to never tell jokes he wouldn't say in front of his mother and is most remembered for his role as George Stevens on the television adaptation of Amos 'n' Andy.
In his early years, he was performing a vaudeville act for the Barnum & Bailey Circus and later even tried his hand at boxing.
He performed his comedy act at the historic Apollo Theater in Harlem during the 1930s and 1940s.
He was married to his third wife, Benzonia Davis Moore from 1941 to 1956.
He appeared on The Tonight Show with Jack Paar after going through some legal issues involving a deadly weapon.
