He went into private practice after obtaining his law degree from the University of South Dakota in 1975.
He was the only senate candidate to defeat an incumbent in a general election during the 1996 U.S. Senate elections.
He has two sons and a daughter with his wife Barbara, a professional social worker.
He succeeded Chris Dodd as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs.
