He graduated from Harvard University (B.A.) and Columbia University (Ph.D.) with degrees in history.
He received the Templeton Enterprise Award for a 2005 work entitled The Church and the Market: A Catholic Defense of the Free Economy.
He was born to a Lutheran family in Melrose, Massachusetts. He later converted to Roman Catholicism.
He was influenced by the political and economic philosophies of fellow Libertarian Party member Ron Paul.
