Center back who became the captain of Arsenal FC after first joining the team in 2009. In 2014, he began playing for Barcelona. He joined the Belgium national team in 2006.
He played in Ajax's youth system from age 15 to 18, before making his professional debut with the team in 2003.
He helped Ajax win the KNVB Cup in 2006 and 2007.
He began dating Polly Parsons in 2012 and they married in June 2017. They have two sons: Raff and Ace.
He joined teammate Bacary Sagna on Arsenal in 2009.
