Businessman who became the fourth president of the Pennsylvania Railroad, which was the largest corporation in the world at that time.
In the early 1850s, he worked as a station agent for the Pennsylvania Railroad. By the end of that decade, he had become the railroad's general superintendent.
Before becoming president of the Pennsylvania Railroad, he held the same position with the Union Pacific Railroad.
He grew up in Fort Loudoun, Pennsylvania.
He mentored the young Andrew Carnegie.
