20th century vaudevillian actor who changed popular culture forever when he created The Three Stooges in 1922. After his work with The Stooges he appeared in a succession of films for 20th Century Fox, Warner Brothers, and MGM.
He joined his first vaudeville show in 1912.
He is also known for his '30s film roles in San Francisco and Mad Love and his last film, Hollywood Hotel, was released a few days after his death in 1937.
He married his second wife Betty Hickman a year before he died; he previously had a ten-year marriage to Betty Brown.
He is the creator of Shemp Howard's memorable character in the Thee Stooges.
