Stuart Hall
Novelist
Sociologist and cultural theorist whose influential works include Hard Road to Renewal (1988), Formations of Modernity (1992), and Questions of Cultural Identity (1996). He was also a founder of The Birmingham School of Cultural Studies and a frequent contributor to the leftist journal, Marxism Today.
He began his university career at Jamaica College and later attended Oxford on a Rhodes Scholarship. In 1979, he began teaching sociology at Open University.
He served as president of the British Sociological Association in the late 1990s.
He grew up in Jamaica and relocated to England in the 1950s. He married University College London history professor, Catherine Hall.
He wrote multiple works discussing the theories of Karl Marx.
