Played District Attorney Adam Schiff on the NBC drama Law & Order. He also played the original team leader on Mission Impossible.
He starred on stage in the 1946 production of A Flag Is Born, which also starred a young Marlon Brando.
He chose his roles to have social meaning over commercial success, appearing in little known but important titles like The Trial of Sacco and Vanzetti in 1960.
He had four children with his first wife, Selma Stern, and after their divorce, he remarried and had five children with Rachel Hill.
He was in the 1986 Arnold Schwarzenegger action film Raw Deal.
