With over fifteen million records sold, he became popular for music recordings with Frank Zappa's band.
He started taking guitar lessons when he was thirteen years old. One of his first bands was called The Steve Vais.
Many of his songs are featured in video games, including Formula One for Playstation.
He married the former bassist for Vixen, Pia Maiocco, in 1988. The couple has a pair of sons named Fire and Julian.
He and David Lee Roth worked together in a band from 1985 to 1990.
