Won the Pulitzer Prize for Music for his 2009 composition "Double Sextet." He became one of the pioneers of minimal music in the 1960s by employing tape loops to create phrasing patterns in compositions such as "It's Gonna Rain."
He received a BA in philosophy from Cornell University in 1957.
He reworked two songs by the rock band Radiohead for "Radio Rewrite," his composition from 2013.
He collaborated with his wife Beryl Korot on "The Cave," his opera from 1993.
He and Phillip Glass were contemporaries and equally influential on the musical tastes of their generation.
