He pursued skateboarding before starting his musical career. After an accident involving him on his skateboard and a car, he started playing guitar.
His main influences are Depeche Mode and Led Zeppelin, but he has said that he mostly listens to rap and hip hop.
He and his sister Marci were raised in Sacramento, California.
Stevo Pearce has been one of Carpenter's major influences.
