Director and choreographer of classics such as Singin' in the Rain and On the Town. His other films include Royal Wedding, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Funny Face and Indiscreet.
He turned to cinema to cope with being bullied by anti-semitic classmates.
He received an Honorary Academy Award in 1998 for his body of work. He was sometimes referred to as the King of Hollywood Musicals.
He was a longtime partner of director and comedian Elaine May. He was briefly married to Pamela Braden from 1990 until 1994.
He co-directed the classic musical Singin' in the Rain with actor Gene Kelly.
