Architect
American architect whose work includes the triumphal arch at Washington Square, the Judson Memorial Church and the Cosmopolitan Building. In 1906, he was killed by Harry Kendall Thaw for having an affair with the millionaire's wife, actress Evelyn Nesbit.
He received no formal training in architecture and learned his craft by studying under acclaimed architect Henry Hobson Richardson.
The legal proceedings surrounding his murder came to be referred to as the "Trial of the Century" by local newspapers.
He married Bessie Springs Smith in 1884. Together, they had a son named Lawrence in 1887.
He was portrayed by actor Ray Milland in the 1955 film The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing.
