Sônia Guajajara
Activist
Environmental and indigenous advocate known for her work with the Guajajara people. She is also known for having been the Socialism and Liberty Party candidate for the vice-presidency of Brazil, making her the first indigenous person to run for the position.
She studied at an agricultural college in Minas Geraid and went on to study at the Federal University of Maranhao as well.
She was named to the Brazilian Ordem do Merito Cultural. She was also awarded a medal by Maranhao state.
She was born and raised in a small village in the Amazonian rain forest in Maranhao state.
She scheduled and facilitated an important meeting between indigenous leaders and the president of Brazil Dilma Rousseff.
