He had bad eyesight which kept him out of the Royal Air Force, so he went into movie directing instead.
He also co-produced the film, Such a Long Journey, which was nominated for a Genie Award for Best Motion Picture.
He was married to Susan George from 1984 to 2010.
Lucy Benjamin acted with him in the show, Casualty.
