She was drawn, during her childhood, to the aromas and exciting ingredients in her family's kitchen. She independently published her first book in 2004.
She has said she likes to travel and perform cooking demos.
She spent a lot of time in a conservative Mennonite community and attended a Mennonite church. She was born in Harrodsburg, Kentucky.
She is a well respected chef, much like Emeril Lagasse.
