Sebastião Salgado
Photographer
Award-winning photographer known for such photojournalism projects as Migrations, Sahel: The End of the Road, and Genesis. His socially-themed documentary projects often focus on the plight of workers in third-world countries.
After studying economics at the University of Sao Paulo, he worked for the International Coffee Organization. It was during his worldwide travels with this organization that he first became interested in photography.
He received the 1993 Royal Photographic Society medal and fellowship.
He established a photography agency called Amazonas Images with his wife, Lelia Wanick Salgado.
He and Australian artist Ken Done both became UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors.
