Rising to fame as the season two host of The Mind of a Chef, he was nominated for a Daytime Emmy as Outstanding Culinary Host. His first cookbook, Heritage, was also a New York Times bestseller after it was released in October 2014. He is best known for his mastery of traditional Southern cuisine.
He first became known as the executive chef of Husk in Charleston, South Carolina in 2010. Shortly after it was named the Best New Restaurant in America by Bon Appétit magazine.
In 2010, he was given the James Beard Foundation Award for Best Southeastern Chef.
He married Tonya Brock in Charleston, South Carolina in 2006.
Both he and fellow chef David Chang have served as hosts on the PBS series The Mind of a Chef.
