Jazz bassist who performed with Grammy Award-nominated pianist Bill Evans in the Bill Evans Trio.
He played piano in elementary school, the clarinet in junior high, tenor saxophone in high school, and the double bass right before he entered Ithaca College's music program.
He played gigs with jazz luminaries including Benny Goodman, Chet Baker, and Stan Kenton.
He grew up in Newark, New Jersey.
He and Charles Mingus were considered some of the most technically proficient jazz bassists of their time.
