Originally chartered as East Alabama Male College, the university developed greatly over the years, becoming one of Alabama's largest universities, enrolling over 25,000 students annually.
Trivia
The school was founded just a few years before the start of the American Civil War and would close its doors until the end of the war, reopening in 1866.
