Co-educational university founded as a teacher's college which expanded to include other programs in 1967. It joined the University of North Carolina system in 1971. 

Trivia

Time magazine recognized the school as "College of the Year" in 2001. It was featured in The Princeton Review's 2008 edition of America's Best Value Colleges.
