Decorated 20th-century soldier who was awarded the Medal of Honor, the French Croix de Guerre, and Italy's Meriot di Guerra.
He enlisted in the army as a private and served in the Philippines early in his military career.
He fought in France during World War I.
He was born in Belleview, Indiana.
He and fellow Medal of Honor recipient, Alvin York, were two of the three soldiers chosen to dedicate the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in 1921.
