Olympic diver who was the first Asian-American Olympic gold medalist in history, winning in 1948 in London.
He earned an M.D. from the University of Southern California in 1947.
He took home a 10 m platform gold medal at the 1948 London games and the 1952 Helsinki games.
He fathered two children, Pamela and Sammy II, with his longtime wife Roz.
His distinction as the first Asian American to win a gold medal at the Olympics would be remembered in 2012 when Gabby Douglas became the first African-American gymnast in Olympic history to win the individual all-arounds.
