One of the most influential directors of the Iranian New Wave movement whose work included At Five in the Afternoon and Blackboards.
She left high school at 14 to study film at the Mohhmalbaf Film House for five years.
She was at the forefront of the women's rights movement in Iranian cinema.
She married and had three children with Fatemeh Meshkini who was tragically killed in an accident in 1992.
Her father was writer and director Mohsen Makhmalbaf.
