Hall of Fame slugger for the Detroit Wolverines and Philadelphia Phillies who recorded a career .331 average during the deadball era.
He entered the major leagues in 1885, and had his breakout year two seasons later, when he batted .372 and scored 118 runs.
In a May 1887 game he hit two bases-loaded triples - a record that was tied, but unbroken over the entire next century.
He was born in Danville, Indiana. He and Ida Morasha married in 1888.
His 1887 record of 166 runs batted in stood unbroken for more than three decades before Babe Ruth finally broke it in 1921.
