His parents were forced to move him to another school after his frequent fighting landed him in trouble at Fresno High School.
He was nicknamed Bloody Sam for his violent revisionist approach to the Western genre.
He married Marie Selland in 1947, Begoia Palacios in 1965, and Joey Gould in 1972.
He and Albert Brooks were contemporaries.
