Former hedge fund analyst who left Wall Street to launch his free online academy, the Khan Academy in 2005. The educational videos are distributed through YouTube, reaching over 6 million subscribers. He also founded the brick-and-mortar school Khan Lab School.
He earned three degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and an MBA from Harvard University.
He was named to Times annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2012.
He had two children with wife Umaima Marvi, a medical doctor.
His Academy drew support and praise from Microsoft CEO Bill Gates.
