British actress best known for starring in the 2006 Jane Eyre miniseries and playing Alice Morgan in the BBC series Luther. She also played Alison Bailey on the Showtime series The Affair and Marisa Coulter in HBO's His Dark Materials.
She graduated from the University of Nottingham in 2003 with a degree in history and went on to study acting at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
Her early television credits include appearances in ten episodes of the satirical British comedy series Suburban Shootout.
She grew up with three siblings. Her father worked as a banker and her mother worked as a probation officer. Her grandfather, Alexander Wilson, was a novelist.
She performed with Jude Law in a 2011 theatrical production of Anna Christie at London's Donmar Warehouse. Her role as the play's title character won her the 2012 Olivier Award for Best Actress.
