She was a costume designer before earning her first chance to perform in local Chicago nightclubs.
She was also seen in Broadway productions of Whoopee! and Simple Simon.
She married piano player Myrl Alderman after divorcing her first husband, Moe Snyder, in 1937.
She was portrayed by Doris Day in the 1955 dramatization of her life, Love Me or Leave Me.
