MLB first baseman who was selected to seven All-Star games in his 13-year career.
He was born in Alabama, but later moved to Georgia where he learned to excel in baseball by playing with men much older than himself.
He hit 18 home runs in August, 1937, which set a new MLB record for the most home runs in one month.
He had two daughters and a son with his wife.
He played with Hall of Fame slugger Hank Greenberg for several years on the Detroit Tigers.
