Austrian chess master of the romantic variety whose career was interrupted by the Nazi occupation of his homeland.
He studied to become a lawyer as a young man but never worked as one.
His nickname was "The Master of Attack" and he wrote the classic Chess book The Art of Sacrifice in Chess .
He was born to a Jewish family in Austria and had to flee to Sweden, where he died in poverty shortly after, to escape the Nazis.
Emanuel Lasker was among his major competitors.
