Dutch musical composer and poet best known for classical-style orchestral pieces like "Book of Mirrors." She focused on the intricacies of sound, the impact of emotion, and the influence of psychoacoustic effects in her music.
She received a Master's degree in chemical engineering before obtaining a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Columbia University. She wrote for and performed with New Wave band Boolean.
She was awarded the first prize for poetry at De Pythische Spelen, Amsterdam, in 1995.
Her birthname was Katrien Rozalie Hirs. She was born into a family in the Dutch city of Gouda.
Her poem "Lucifer" was written as a reference to John Milton's "Paradise Lost" and to an earlier dramatic work by Joost van den Vondel.
