She earned a bachelor's degree from Marymount College in Tarrytown, New York before attaining separate master's degrees from the London School of Economics and Columbia University.
She is a leader in the group Catholic Democrats, which, despite the Church's views to the contrary, is a pro-choice organization.
Her father and all of her grandparents were Italian immigrants and she married Stan Greenberg, a political strategist.
She was a top contender for the position of Labor Secretary in the Obama administration, but the position eventually went to Hilda Solis instead.
