Preeminent American saxophonist known for his work in the jazz, funk, and R&B genres. His first hit song, "Always There," was included on his debut solo album, Pressure Sensitive.
He attended Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas but never graduated.
He briefly played saxophone for Earth, Wind & Fire but left the band before it achieved any success.
He grew up with seven siblings, including a younger sister, Debra, who had a career as a singer.
He collaborated with fellow saxophonist Kenny Garrett.
