English-born actor who most theirly played Major Arnold Ernst Toht, the deranged Nazi, in the 1981 film, Raiders of the Lost Ark. He also played Heinrich Himmler in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
He trained briefly at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and went on to perform in a 1962 Royal Court Theatre production of Chips with Everything.
His unusual physique - chubby cheeks, small eyes, a large facial mole, a pug nose, and a trademark evil smile - made him the go-to actor for Hollywood villain roles.
He was married twice - to Mela White and Joanna Baker - and had three children. His daughter, Rebecca Lacey, became an actress.
He acted alongside Clint Eastwood in the 1982 film, Firefox.
