About

Remembered for his association with the Hudson River School, this nineteenth-century American artist painted Landing of Hendrik Hudson, The Embarkation of the Pilgrims, and other historically-themed artworks.

Before Fame

In his early adulthood years, he took art classes in New York City, Florence, and Rome. He later taught art at the United States Military Academy (in West Point, New York).

Trivia

His most their work, The Embarkation of the Pilgrims, was mounted in the rotunda of the United States Capitol building.

Family Life

He was born and raised in New Rochelle, New York. His marriage resulted in sixteen children, including two artist sons: Julian Alden Weir and John Ferguson Weir.
