He has degrees in engineering and medicine.
He wrote two columns for a newspaper while on STS-78, the first time an astronaut has written for and been published by a newspaper while in space.
He married Brenda Biasutti and had three children.
He and Boris Borisovich Yegorov were physicians who traveled to space.
