He was a graduate of the University of Illinois, earning bachelor's degrees in Math and Philosophy.
He was the chief engineer in Oracle's early days, creating most of the Oracle Version 3 program himself.
He grew up in Cicero, Illinois, the son of two Iranian immigrants.
He met his future partner and Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison at another tech company, Ampex.
