Track and field star who won Olympic gold medals in the 1896 shot put and discus throw and silver in the 1896 high jump and long jump.
He was educated at Princeton University.
He took bronze in the 1900 Olympic standing triple jump and shot put.
He grew up in Baltimore County, Maryland.
Actor Hunt Block portrayed him in the 1984 NBC miniseries "The First Olympics: Athens 1896."
