Richard Hofstadter
Historian
Famous American historian, author, and public intellectual of the mid-Twentieth Century. His notable works include The Paranoid Style in American Politics, The Age of Reform, and Anti-Intellectualism in American Life.
He was a member of the Young Communist League when he was in his early twenties. He attended the University of Buffalo, where he studied history and philosophy.
He won the Pulitzer Prize twice: first, in 1956, for a book about the populism movement of the 1890s, and again in 1964 for a work on the theme of American intellectualism.
His marriage to his first wife, Felice Swados, lasted until her death in 1945. He later married Beatrice Kevitt.
Historian Eric Foner was once his student.
