Before Fame

He was a member of the Young Communist League when he was in his early twenties. He attended the University of Buffalo, where he studied history and philosophy.

Trivia

He won the Pulitzer Prize twice: first, in 1956, for a book about the populism movement of the 1890s, and again in 1964 for a work on the theme of American intellectualism.

Family Life

His marriage to his first wife, Felice Swados, lasted until her death in 1945. He later married Beatrice Kevitt.
