He worked for 3M, which was at the time just a modest manufacturer of sandpaper.
He noticed a local body shop was having trouble keeping straight lines when painting cars, which inspired him to come up with masking tape.
He didn't have much interest in science or engineering growing up, preferring to play the banjo instead.
His tape and its distributor 3M were helped along by businessman Kevin Sharer.
