Before his Hollywood debut, he worked as a truck driver and a Wall Street clerk, and got a job as a waiter and singer at a resort.
He was considered for the title role of The Godfather, but was cast as a rival don, who was assassinated in the film.
He grew up in Jersey City, New Jersey, the son of a Italian immigrant who worked as a barber.
He got started on Broadway with the help of the great Broadway actor and director, Elia Kazan.
