He never lost a fight as an amateur, winning 4 consecutive Guantes de Oro de México Championships.
He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2007 and became a boxing broadcaster on the network Televisa.
His son is Flyweight fighter, Alonso Lopez.
He and fellow Mexican fighter Julio Cesar Chavez were both inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
