Dutch anatomist best remembered for his key contributions to the field of reproductive biology. He was the first of his colleagues to understand the function of the Fallopian tube and invented the syringe.
He studied under renowned scientist Franciscus Sylvius while attending college in Leiden.
His studies on rabbits rather than humans also led to some inaccuracies in his work, including the assumption that fertilization occurs in the ovaries.
He had a son who died at an early age.
He and Albrecht von Haller are two of history's most their anatomists.
